GLIAC - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2021 All-GLIAC Men's Tennis Team following the Conference Tournament held at the Midland Tennis Center. Senior Juan-Louis vanAntwerpen was named First Team All-GLIAC and senior
Jonathan Bulmer was named Honorable Mention All-GLIAC for the Panthers who finished fifth in GLIAC Tournament.
vanAntwerpen is on the first team for the first time and also earned second team honors as a freshman back in the 2017-18 campaign. He compiled a 5-2 record in singles during GLIAC matches playing No. 1 for the entire season. He also was 10-7 overall in singles. He was also 6-1 in doubles in GLIAC matches and 10-7 overall. He teamed up with Bulmer in all of those doubles matches in the conference. vanAntwerpen currently has 49 career singles wins to rank seventh all-time at DU and his 48 career doubles wins ranks sixth.
Bulmer returns to the honorable mention list also receiving it during the 2018-19 season. He went 4-4 in singles during GLIAC action and 12-6 overall. He played No. 4 singles 14 times and also played No. 3 singles three times and No. 2 singles once. Bulmer went 7-1 in doubles during GLIAC matchups and 14-3 overall. Bulmer ranks fifth at Davenport with 51 career singles wins and second with 57 career doubles wins.
"For all of our players to stay focused and disciplined through the constantly changing COVID situations speaks to the level of maturity of our teams. The players selected to the all-conference teams played a large role in maintaining that culture. Playing in the top positions, Juan-Louis is always facing tough opposition. Along with his strong singles and doubles record this year, he was also the most engaged with supporting and leading his teammates throughout the season. Johnny is typically the guy setting the tone for practices. As his teammate, your goal is to work as hard as he does. Although quieter, his leadership is felt by example of staying focused and taking care of business. His singles position this year may have cost him higher accolades, but he was a rock for us down the stretch and no team had a better doubles record than Johnny and Juan-Louis. These two were recognized for their level of tennis this season, but not to go unnoticed was the multiple examples of opposing coach and player respect that was given to our players for their sportsmanship and character. It is something myself and coach Flowers hold above all else and in a year where so much adversity was in their way," said head coach
Patrick Grashorn.
