GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Win and you're in! That was the simple message delivered to the men's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon in their matchup against Northwood University. The Panthers and Timberwolves entered the match with identical league records (2-5) and were fighting for a spot in the GLIAC Tournament. DU pulled out the 4-3 win to improve to 8-9 overall and now await their seeding in the conference tournament.
The match hinged on three doubles early on as the other doubles split.
Bernard Anderson and
Matt Leatherman teamed up for a 7-6 win over Clayton Scott and Tony Henrio. The tiebreaker went 7-3 as DU took a 2-1 lead.
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen got the first singles win at the one spot by scores of 6-4, 6-2 over Leon Grundstrom. The Timberwolves got the next point at two singles as Ben Brandherm won 7-6, 6-3 over
Frank Piana III.
Jonathan Bulmer gave DU a 4-2 lead at three singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mathis Violet. Henrio at four singles made it 4-3 as he won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 over
Juan Jose Pino Contoleon.
The clinching point came at six singles as Anderson pulled out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Scott. Leatherman fell 6-4, 6-1 at five singles against David Sedlar to conclude the match.
