HOLLAND, Mich. – Davenport got a taste of competition for the first time in 2018 over the weekend. The Panthers travelled to Hope College on Saturday for a morning match against the Flying Dutchmen. By a score of 9-0 DU swept Hope College. The Panthers were supposed to play Earlham College as well on Saturday, but the Quakers weren't able to make the trip due to the mass amounts of snow.
The match opened up with three doubles matches.
Marc Lerch and
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen earned the 8-4 victory in the first doubles slot. In the second doubles match
Matthew McClurg and
Remy Johansen came away with an 8-3 victory.
Max Hartman and Jonathan Bulmer gave DU their third point of the match after an 8-1 victory in the third doubles slot.
In singles all six Panthers walked away victorious. Johansen competed in the first singles and won 6-2, 6-3. Van Antwerpen competed in the second singles and won 6-1 and 6-3. In the third singles Lerch had his hands full with Timothy Roe from Hope. Lerch won 7-6 and 6-4 to give DU another point. McClurg took care of business 6-4 and 6-4 in the fourth singles, while Bulmer won 6-3 and 6-1 in the fifth singles. In the sixth and final singles match Digby won 6-2 and 6-3.
Davenport will be travelling to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on former WHAC opponent Indiana Tech. The match will be played on Sunday, February 18 at 12:00 p.m.
