CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport track and field teams hosted the GLIAC Outdoor Championships for the first time since joining the conference for the 2017-18 season. The Panthers seemed to enjoy competing at home as both men and women's teams turned in their best team finishes since entering the league. The men's team finished third with 68.5 points and the women's team finished fifth with 55.5 points.
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS
Emma and
Isaiah Schafer brought home individual wins during the three-day event. Emma won the GLIAC heptathlon outdoors for the second time in her career (2018) and ran away with the title. She finished with 5,067 points to not only set a new personal best but also hit a NCAA provisional mark. The next closest competitor had just 4,207 points. The provisional mark is currently eighth best in Division II. Isaiah won the shot put after coming into the event with the third best mark in the conference. He saved his best attempt for last as he threw 59' 7" to win by five inches over Zechariah Stickler of Northwood. Isaiah also hit a provisional mark but his 59' 9" toss back on April 10 is currently eighth best in Division II.
PODIUM FINISHERS
Emma Schafer followed up her heptathlon win by finishing second in the javelin with a personal best of 131' 11".
Ethan Flores finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.44 and also set a personal best and a NCAA provisional mark. The men's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Flores,
Colin Grady, Brendan LaLonde and
Noah Dooley finished third with a time of 42.12. Grady placed second in the long jump at 22' 9.25" and accomplished that on his third attempt.
Bryce Albrecht took second in the decathlon with 6,108 points which set a new personal best.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Corbin DeJonge finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.79. DeJonge also placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.21.
Demetri Griffin placed seventh in the high jump (5' 10.5") and also seventh in the triple jump (40' 4"). Dooley finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 21' 11".
Isaiah Schafer placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 170' 5" and hit a provisional mark.
Claude Ockert placed sixth in the hammer throw (196' 10") and hit a provisional mark.
Scout Nelson finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.95.
Emma Schafer took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.58 seconds and set a personal best.
Josephine Sokol took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:06.34 and set a personal best.
Alexandra Eby placed sixth in the pole vault clearing 11' 9.75".
Mackenzie Brigham finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 34' 7".
Lisa Wangler placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 166' 0".Â
