Aquinas Pressure Keeps DU Offense at Bay

Panthers only mustered two shots on goal in the third period

BYRON CENTER, Mich. – After a couple of weeks off, the Women's Hockey team traveled just south of town to meet with Aquinas College, looking to avenge their 5-0 loss at home back on Feb. 19.

The Panthers jumped out in front, but that was all DU got on Sunday night, as the Saints took over from there, as they knocked off the Panthers for the second time this season.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 1 – Aquinas 3
Shots: DU 13 | AQ 54
Power Play: DU (0/0) | AQ (0/1)
Records: #10 DU (1-3-0) | #8 AQ (7-0-1)

SOLID START

The Saints came out strong in the first period, earning the majority of the scoring chances. However, Julia Gaynor came up with some big stops in the Panther net. Gaynor's efforts were rewarded after Courtney Mulligan beat Aquinas' Ally Kennedy for her second of the season, and DU led 1-0 just a few minutes in.

The lead did not last long, though, as Madison Morgrette picked off a Panther pass in the DU zone, walked in a took a shot that deflected off of Adriannah Letts and by Gaynor to tie the game at one.

TAKING A STEP BACK

In the second period, the Panthers put some solid pressure, but with a little over five minutes remaining in the frame, AQ's Anna Castle won an offensive zone faceoff to Tori Feddema fired in her first of the season to give the Saints the lead.

Just a couple of minutes later, Alexandria Dreveline had a great chance in front of the DU net, but Gaynor made a magnificent save. However, Dreveline followed up her rebound by tapping in her third of the season to put the Saints up by a pair.

The Saints did not allow the Panthers to sustain any pressure in the final 20 minutes, and went on to win by a final score of 3-1.

WHO'S NEXT?

The two teams meet again Friday night, once again at Southside Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
