NCAA Recommends STUNT for Emerging Sport Status

INDIANAPOLIS - The Committee on Women's Athletics has officially recommended that all three divisions of the NCAA governance structure add STUNT as an NCAA emerging sport. What does Emerging Sport mean? An emerging sport is a women's sport recognized by the NCAA that is intended to help schools provide more athletics opportunities for women, more sport-sponsorship options for the institutions and also help that sport achieve NCAA championship status.

"On Monday, college STUNT coaches across the nation got the news that has literally changed the game of STUNT," said Davenport STUNT head coach, Celia Kiogima. "The CWA has officially recommended STUNT as an emerging sport to the NCAA! Overwhelmed, thrilled and motivated are just a few emotions that are running through my mind! This is HUGE news for the cheer and STUNT community and is 10 years in the making! Davenport STUNT has made tremendous and successful strides and we are excited to continue the momentum and growth of this sport!"

The Davenport STUNT program has captured five NCA National Championships (2012-16), five-straight Division II STUNT National Championships (2015-19), the STUNT National Championship in 2014, and the Varsity STUNT National Championship in both 2018 and 2019. Coach Kiogima was named STUNT Coach of the Year in 2018 and serves as a member of the STUNT Advisory Board and the College STUNT Coaches Association.

There is one more step to become an official Emerging Sport. Pursuant to governance and legislative processes, each division will determine independently if STUNT will be added to the division's Emerging Sports for Women list and legislation, as well as an effective date, based on the philosophical, strategic, operational and financial priorities of each division.
