Panthers Comeback Falls Short to Penn State

Davenport outshot the Nittany Lions in the third period, but were unable to force overtime.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The women's hockey team hit a snag against Rhode Island on Friday night, but they looked to bounce back against the home Nittany Lions of Penn State on Saturday. DU had won the three previous meetings against Penn State, and looked to spoil the Nittany Lions' Senior Night.

It was not meant to be this time. The teams traded goals in the early minutes of the contest, before Penn State would open up a two-goal lead by the end of the second period. Davenport would score in the third to bring them back within a goal, but could find the equalizer as Penn State would defeat the Panthers for the first time in their history.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 2 – Penn State 3
Shots: DU 28 | PSU 30
Power Play: DU (0/3) | PSU (0/1)
Records: DU (6-16-1) | #14 PSU (7-13)

QUICK BOUNCE BACK

Both teams traded chances throughout the contest on Saturday night, so it was fitting that the Nittany Lions and Panthers scored goals just a minute apart to open the scoring.

Just under five minutes into the contest, Penn State's leading-scorer potted her ninth goal of the season to put the Nittany Lions up 1-0. Less than 30 seconds later, Elizabeth O'Conner would score her first collegiate goal to make to the game at one, with Julia Gaynor and Amanda Ballestero picking up the assists.

HOME VALLEY

Only a few minutes later, Jackie Ricko would score her first of the season to give the Nittany Lions their second lead of the game.

In period two, Penn State outshot the Panthers by an 11-9 margin, with Dayna Templeton trying to hold the fort for DU, but the Nittany Lions would extend their lead to two following Trsh Cierniak's fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1 heading into the third period.

COMING UP SHORT

Davenport started to pile up the scoring chances in the final 20 minutes, firing 14 shots at Penn State's Lindsey Scott. They were able to cut into the Nittany Lions' lead with Caitlin Miscovich scoring her second of the season from Zoie Amatore minutes into the period.

DU would push late, looking for the tying goal, but they could not convert, and Penn State would hand the Panthers the 3-2 loss.

WHO'S NEXT?

Only one more weekend left in the Panthers' regular season, and it starts with a pair of games against Concordia University (Mich.). This the second season for the Cardinals' program, and have lost all 20 games they have played so far. Davenport won both meetings last season, beating Concordia by a combined score of 31-2.

Game one of the two-game set will be at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea on Friday the 21st. Puck drop scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
