Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team hosted Grand Valley State in their 2014-15 home opener Friday night, but was unable to come away with any goals as the Lakers defeated the Panthers 1-0. The two teams will see one another again tomorrow afternoon in game two of their home-and-home series.
In the first period of action, the both the Panthers and Lakers played tightening defense as neither team found the back of the net.
Victoria Smishek faced 19 Laker shots on goal, but what was able to come out with a scoreless frame.
The second period saw a very similar outcome, as both teams were unable to come away with any points. Davenport only managed two shots in the period, but the goaltending display of Smishek kept the Panthers alive through two.
With 4:49 left in the third period, the Lakers finally broke the 0-0 tie, as Corey Robison found the back of the net on a power play goal to put Grand Valley up 1-0. The Panthers did see some scoring opportunities in the remaining minutes of the period, but was unable to tie the game up as Grand Valley closed the game out with a 1-0 victory. The Panthers have now dropped three in a row, but look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon.
The Panthers and Lakers will head to the Georgetown Ice Center tomorrow afternoon for game two of the home-and-home series, with the puck set to drop at 3:30 p.m.
