Panthers sweep Cardinals to start GLIAC play

DU has won six in a row and improved to 9-5 overall

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team took care of business on Friday in a GLIAC doubleheader sweep over Saginaw Valley State to open conference play. DU (9-5, 2-0) has won six in a row after a 5-3 and 13-6 triumph over the Cardinals on the road.

Game one was a pitcher's duel up until the fifth inning when both teams got on the scoreboard. James Rogers tossed four innings of no-hit ball until a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. He got some run support in the top of the fifth as DU took a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back walks started the inning and both Noah Marcoux and Kamrin Markwardt came around to score. Hunter Ruhstorfer and Christian Petre had a RBI groundout and Nolan Anspaugh also drove in a run with a single to center.

Saginaw Valley State responded with three runs in their half of the fifth. Rogers ran into issues with control problems as he hit two batters and walked three more. Zach Haefer inherited a bases loaded jam with two outs and got a strikeout looking to end the inning and preserve the one-run lead.

The Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Ruhstorfer singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Petre walked and Nolan Bryant sacrificed them up a base on a bunt. Anspaugh reached on a fielder's choice which drove in a run. Cal Djuraskovic entered for the save in the bottom of the inning and earned his third of the season. He allowed a one-out single but struck out the next two batters.

The Cardinals scored single runs in each of the first four innings in game two to build a 4-2 lead. Derrick Edington got the start but lasted just 2.2 innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. James Kohl relieved him in the third inning and would get the win in relief. That is because Davenport scored four runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

The Panthers broke it open with a run in the eighth and four more in the ninth. DU pounded 17 hits in the nightcap. Anspaugh had a three-run homer in the fifth. Marcoux homered on a solo shot also in the fifth. Bryant also went yard for a solo bomb in the seventh. Bryant finished 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Carson Eby went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Anspaugh led the team with four RBI. Ben Mets also went 2-for-6 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Max Swan and Evan Maize kept the big lead intact with solid relief outings. Swan pitched 1.2 innings and allowed no hits with two strikeouts. Maize tossed the ninth and walked two with a punchout.
