DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Davenport University Dance team clinched their third title as a program this past week at the 2021 National Dance Association (NDA) National Championship. The team of 14 created a season full of different opportunities, virtual training, bonding, NDA home camp, and eventually in-person training. The 2020-2021 roster, made up of seven freshmen;
Ashleigh Wilson,
Arion Cross,
Emma Smith,
Jadyn Williams,
Macey Charles, Makayla Fischer, and
Morgan McElveny, hit the floor with confidence, maturity, and top-notch athleticism. There was a total of six teams within their competitive fold for the team routine piece, which is made up of choreography featuring pom, jazz, and hip-hop styles, to showcase the teams well roundedness. After prelims, Davenport scored a 85.3 in the top spot with four teams within a one point difference. At finals, after a few reworks and cleaning the routine further, the team was able to increase their score to 86.92 and lengthen the gap between their competitors. Tarleton State University (86.10) and Texas Woman's University (85.4) secured the second and third place spots in a fiercely competitive group. The team also competed in Division II Jazz and secured a second place title behind the Lindenwood Lionettes.
Coach Geyer, in her seventh season, stated, "There are truly no words to convey the emotions we felt this past week. From the support of alumni, the University, families, the intimate awards experience we had together, everything was a dream. We had one goal, and that was to get here, to compete, to show off their work and now look at them, Champions! It truly came down to heart. I do not think all of these pieces would have fallen into place without their hearts and pure dedication to me as a coach and to each other. I am humbled and thankful to be surrounded by this talented group of young women."
The team is eager to get back to campus and finish out their semester in the coming weeks. The 2021 – 2022 roster is still being built and will be announced in the late spring. The 2020-2021 team though, has left their legacy forever.
