GLIAC Release
GLIAC - Davenport senior,
Chris Rollins, was named GLIAC South Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.5 steals per game in a pair of wins over Michigan Tech, the league's first-place team entering last week. Rollins joins
Delano Smith (two-time winner),
Dyllon Hudson-Emory (2),
Robbie Bramhill (2), and
Avery Hudson (3) as past Panthers to have received the honor and is the first DU guard to do so since Hudson became a three-time winner over two years ago.
"Chris is playing with a high level of confidence at this point," said head coach,
Burt Paddock. "But he deserves it with the tremendous practices he has had for the last three to four weeks. His play has inspired his team to continue to get better each day and he's been the catalyst for our recent success. I have no doubt Chris is driven to have a tremendous stretch run for himself and most importantly our team. We're really looking forward to Chris leading us these last five games and into the GLIAC Tournament."
In Friday's 73-58 victory over the Huskies, Rollins poured in 20 points for his sixth 20-point effort of the season and followed it up with a team-high 19 points in Saturday's 77-70 win. Not only did the Detroit native put up 39 points, but did so efficiently as he shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field and 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the arc. Rollins is now fourth in the league in scoring (17.6 PPG), second in assists (4.6 APG) and first in steals (2.9 SPG). For his career, Rollins needs just 12 points to become the eighth member of Davenport's 1,000-point club and his career scoring average of 13.2 is tied for fourth in program history.
Not only was Michigan Tech alone in first place entering last week, but was a perfect 5-0 in road games for 2021. Also, Friday's 15-point win marked the largest margin of victory for either team in the eight all-time meetings with the previous best being 13 in favor of Davenport on Feb. 21, 2019.
Rollins and company have won three of their last four games to get back to 5-8 overall and will play their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday against crosstown rival, Grand Valley State. Tip-off against the Lakers is set for 5 p.m. inside the DU Student Center and you can preview that matchup right
