GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team trailed visiting Ashland by 14, 43-29, at the break on Friday and could never get closer than 11, 43-32, in the second half before falling by a score of 76-57. The Panthers and Eagles will do battle again on Saturday with tip-off inside the DU Student Center set for 1 p.m.
Three Panthers scored in double-figures including
Chris Rollins with 12,
Elijah Belle with 12 and
Scott Ulaneo with 11. Ulaneo was also the team's leader in rebounds (6) and blocks (1) while Rollins was on top of the leaderboard in both assists (7) and steals (3). All nine of the players that saw the floor for Davenport were able to find the scoring column.
Davenport opened the night with an 11-5 run and led by seven again at 14-7 before Ashland responded with a 12-2 spurt of its own to go ahead by three, 19-16. The Panthers then took the advantage back at 20-19 when freshmen,
Jeff Carrier and
James Felton, each hit a two-pointer. However, the Eagles proceeded to rattle off nine-straight points, were ahead by eight, 28-20, and didn't look back. They would go on to lead by as many as 14 in the first half and 21, 61-40, in the second.
The biggest difference came behind the arc where Ashland cashed in on 13 three-point attempts (13-of-29), the most by a Davenport opponent this season, to just seven (7-of-23) by the Panthers. Ashland also out-rebounded Davenport 34-25 on the defensive glass and the Eagles' Brandon Haraway (24 points) and Bo Furcron (20 points) combined for 44 points on 16-of-26 shooting from the field.
