ALLENDALE, Mich. - Davenport (2-5) led Grand Valley State (4-3) by as many as 10, 58-48, with just under nine minutes to play on Tuesday night before the Lakers began to claw back into it. Grand Valley State cut the deficit to one, 71-70, with just four ticks remaining, but
Chris Rollins put the win on ice at the free throw line with the final two of his game-high 22 points. The 73-70 win improves the Panthers to 4-4 against the Lakers since joining the GLIAC prior to the 2017-18 season.
Chris Rollins stuffed the stat sheet with those 22 points (5-of-9 from deep) to go with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals to only two turnovers in 35 minutes of action.
Scott Ulaneo secured his first-career double-double thanks to 15 points and 10 boards while
Evan Hines and
Elijah Belle each scored in double-figures as well with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
The first half opened up with three lead changes in the first 17 total points scored, the last of which came when Belle put Davenport ahead, 9-8, with a three-pointer, one of three triples on the night for the sophomore. That bucket sparked a 10-2 run for the Panthers as they pushed their advantage to six, 16-10, at the 9:34 mark. From there until the break, the home team pulled within one at 17-16, but never tied or took the lead, and the visitors led by as many as eight, 24-16, before the four-point halftime advantage.
Out of the locker room, Grand Valley State scored five-straight points to regain the lead, 29-28, and even went ahead by four, 32-28, just under two minutes into the second stanza. Following a pair of ties at 32-32 and 35-35, Davenport took the advantage back and eventually pushed it to that 10-point mark when Hines hit a three-pointer at the 8:42 mark.
Next up on the schedule, Davenport will host Ashland on Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.). The Eagles lost at Wayne State on Tuesday to fall to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in GLIAC play.
