GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team will be traveling to Michigan Tech this week to open up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action against the Huskies. The Panthers and Huskies are both 2-0 this season and are looking to extend their win streak at Sherman Field on Saturday (1 p.m. kickoff). Davenport has had a three-game win streak in their brief history coming in their inaugural season of 2016. The wins came against Kentucky Wesleyan (41-7), Arizona Christian (20-7) and Saint Xavier (20-7). The last time that Michigan Tech had a three-game win streak dates back to the 2015 campaign when they began 5-0.
The Panthers will be playing their first NCAA Division II opponent this week after wins over NAIA Robert Morris and NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Defense has been the story for the Panthers through two games this season. DU leads Division II in scoring defense (5.0), rushing defense (17.0) and total defense (111.0). They also are third nationally in third down conversion on defense (13.8).
Davenport by the numbers has shown that it is an improved team this season. The Panthers are averaging 25.5 points per game and have outgained their opponents, 779-222, through eight quarters of football. The Panthers are converting 42 percent (13-of-31) on third down and are 2-of-3 on fourth down. The team is particularly strong when it comes to the red zone. DU has scored 4-of-6 possessions while opponents are 2-of-4. Three of the four possessions for DU have resulted in touchdowns.
