DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – The Davenport men's soccer team is set to take on Rio Grande (Ohio) at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the second semi finals games of the night. Hastings and Grand View are competing against each other in the first semi final game going on right now.
Rio Grande is the second ranked team in the tournament, while Davenport is ranked sixth. The two teams have only met once in their history. Back in 2013 Rio defeated the Panthers 2-1 in double over time.
Davenport defeated Purdue North-West, Midland (Neb.) and William Carey (Miss.) on their way to the national semi finals. The Panthers defeated Purdue North-West 3-1 in the opening round on a snowy Davenport field, shutout Midland 2-0 in the round of 16, and won a thrilling game against William Carey 3-2 in double over time in the round of eight.
This is the second time in the last three years that Davenport has been in the semi finals of the NAIA national tournament. In 2014 the Panthers won the national championship with a 2-1 over time victory against University of Texas at Brownsville. Last year, 2015, Davenport got eliminated by Midamerica Nazarene University 1-0 in the round of eight.
So far the Panthers have scored eight goals through three national tournament games.
Brogan Shrimpton (3),
Jordan Van Oostenbrugge (2),
TJ Ifaturoti (2), and
Brayden Texer (1) were responsible for the Panthers goals so far.
Tyler Collishaw has led the charge in assists for Davenport with four, Ifaturoti and Van Oostenbrugge each have one assist as well.
Aaron Orban has played all three games in goal and has seven saves while only letting up three goals.
