ALLENDALE, Mich. - Facing Northern Michigan for the third time this season, the result was the same as the first two meetings as the No. 25 Davenport women's lacrosse team picked up its first ever GLIAC Tournament win on Friday afternoon. The second-seeded Panthers defeated the third-seeded Wildcats, 17-7, in the quarterfinal round and now move on to the finals to play top-seeded/No. 12 Grand Valley State at noon on Sunday in Allendale.
The first half was a tight one that saw two ties (1-1 and 5-5) and Davenport had a lead of just two goals, 7-5, at the break. The first two times these teams met this season, the Panthers held leads of 12-1 and 12-4 at the intermission. Friday, Davenport exploded for 10 goals in the second half and held Northern Michigan to just two scores to completely take over the game.
Davenport improved to 11-2 on the season as seven different Panthers found the scoring column including
Anna Glynn (6 goals),
Ryann Deuel (4),
Reilly Noble (2),
Aaliyah Miller (2),
Monique Vale (1),
Avery Garant (1), and
Brenna Knoll (1). Miller led the way in the assist department with six while Glynn (2), Noble (2) and Knoll (1) also contributed. Seventeen of Davenport's 29 shots on goal came from Deuel (9) and Glynn (8) as those two were each responsible for 10 total shot attempts.
Defensively, the Panthers were paced by Garant (4 ground balls),
Amber Park (4 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers) and Knoll (5 draw controls and 2 caused turnovers). In goal,
Grace DeRidder (9-2) played all 60 minutes for the fifth time this season and tallied one save on 15 total shots faced.
In the team head-to-head, Davenport led the way in total shots (40-15), shots on goal (29-8), assists (11-5), free-position shots (5-4), ground balls (30-20), draw controls (13-11), and caused turnovers (11-7). The Panthers committed just 14 turnovers to the Wildcats' 23 while DU converted on 10 of 12 clears compared to 10-of-21 for NMU.
