Statement Win Keeps Panthers Alive in NCAA Regionals

DU beat GLIAC rival Northwood 16-1 for first NCAA Tournament win

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Facing elimination on Friday night, the Davenport baseball team brought their "A" game in a 16-1 thumping of Northwood University in the NCAA Midwest Regional at Lindenwood University. It is the first NCAA Tournament win for the Panthers who improved to 31-15 overall. The Timberwolves lost for the first time in the regional and are now 28-16. It was the second largest margin of victory in the all-time series against Northwood (18-2 on April 24, 2013) and the second win in a week over the Timberwolves after an 8-4 win in the GLIAC Tournament.

Despite all of the runs scored by Davenport, it was the pitching performance by James Kohl that was most impressive. He started for the second time in a week against NU and went 7.2 innings to get the win. He allowed six hits and one run with four walks and eight strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 3.10 and kept the Timberwolves off balance all night. Kohl is now 8-2 this season on the mound.

The cold and windy night did not seem to bother the Davenport bats. They pounded out 16 hits and plated 16 runs with four doubles. Travis Harvey had two of those doubles and drove in a run. Noah Marcoux went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Christian Petre drove in two runs including a sacrifice fly. Gaetano Vallone went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. In total, 11 different Panthers drove in a run.

Northwood used six pitchers and the loss went to Alan LaBov who lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed six runs in the six-run second inning by Davenport to get things off and running. Jake Jekielek did not fare well either allowing five runs on three hits in just 2/3 of an inning in the five-run seventh for DU.

The Panthers will now face Quincy (29-14) tomorrow at 3 PM central. The Hawks and Panthers played a four-game series at Quincy during the regular season with QU winning three of those games.
