Panthers drop regional opener to Lindenwood 6-2

DU had their 14-game win streak snapped and will now play Northwood at 7:30 PM central tonight

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Davenport baseball 14-game win streak was snapped on Friday in their first game of the NCAA Midwest Regional with a 6-2 loss to Lindenwood. DU held a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Ben Mets hit his sixth homer of the season and drove in his 30th run. The Panthers however could not plate another run despite out-hitting the host Lions 9-7.

Lindenwood made the most of their seven hits with two home runs, two doubles and a triple. The Lions also scored five of their six runs with 2 outs. The 6-7-8 hitters in the lineup did the damage for Lindenwood going 5-for-10 at the plate with four runs and four RBI. Alex Canty went 2-for-3 with a double and triple and also took away a potential run from DU with a diving catch in the bottom of the second. Jayce Maag went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Austin Schmitt and Kolby Schulte also hit home runs for the Lions.

The turning point in the contest came in the bottom of the fifth as the Panthers trailed 3-2 and loaded the bases after a Christian Petre double, Noah Marcoux walk and Travis Harvey infield single with one out. Carson Eby on a 0-1 pitch grounded into a double play which ended the threat.

Schulte's home run in the top of the sixth gave Lindenwood extra cushion with a 4-2 lead. Canty's RBI triple in the top of the seventh made it 5-2 and starter James Rogers was replaced by Zach Haefer. Haefer recorded two outs but then a balk allowed Canty to score for the 6-2 lead.

The Panthers put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Vallone had a single and Petre's second double of the day advanced him to third. Marcoux grounded out to Justin Taylor on the mound and Harvey struck out swinging to end the inning. DU left a single runner on base in the eighth and ninth inning and finished with 10 left on base.

Rogers (8-3) went six innings and allowed six hits and six runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Haefer allowed no runs in two innings and walked one with one strikeout. Max Swan pitched a clean ninth with a walk and strikeout. Vallone, Mets and Petre each had two hits for the Panthers. Davenport (30-15) will now face elimination tonight at 7:30 PM central against GLIAC rival Northwood who won their first game against Illinois-Springfield yesterday in 10 innings.
