CALEDONIA, Mich. - The men's soccer team honored four seniors prior to Sunday's game against Ashland.
Carter Selvius,
Yovany Duran,
Brock Schultz and
Ryan Zietlow played their final home game at Davenport and the Eagles spoiled the positive vibes with a 4-0 win over the depleted Panthers. Selvius was forced to play forward due to injuries after starting in goal all season. Duran was not in the lineup due to a red card in the team's previous game last Sunday. Schultz and Zietlow had a solid game but the Eagles capitalized on their scoring chances. The loss drops the Panthers to 3-4 in the GLIAC to end the regular season. With the loss, DU will now start the GLIAC Tournament on the road with a time and opponent to be determined.
Ashland with the win improved to 3-4 in the GLIAC and scored once in the first half and three more times in the second half. Joseph Renner scored his first of the season in the 21st minute as Rafael Pereira crossed the ball from left wing through the six-yard box and Renner pounded it home in front. The play was interesting in that
Daire O'Riordan had a foot/shoe issue and had to come off the field. The Eagles scored while DU was basically down a man. Yusuke Yasamasu in the 74th minute added an insurance goal as he scored on a breakaway. He carried the ball for 35 yards and fired lower left from around 14 yards. That goal forced DU to really push up and then the Eagles took advantage in transition. Pereira scored in the 80th minute on a rebound and shot from around 17 yards to the top left corner unassisted. Brandon Davidson finished the scoring in the 87th minute as he took a cross from right wing and streaked into the play and connected from around 18 yards to the lower left corner.
Markus Sundin got the start in goal and made one save for Davenport. Each team did record 10 shots with the Eagles having five on goal compared to three for the Panthers.
