DU advances to GLIAC Semifinals on penalty kicks at Northern Michigan

Panthers won 4-1 on PK's and continue to face Parkside on Friday at SVSU

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The men's soccer team had a flair for the dramatic on Sunday as they advanced to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals on penalty kicks. The match ended 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes and set up the excitement inside the Superior Dome. Davenport advanced winning 4-1 in PK's as all four Panthers found the net.

Daire O'Riordan, who scored in the ninth minute, took the first penalty kick and shot low left for the 1-0 lead. Carter Selvius, who made nine saves prior to PK's, stopped Kaffie Kurz' attempt on a dive to the left. Evan Marquess took the next one for DU and fired middle right for the 2-0 lead. Niko Scheibal scored next for the Wildcats to make it 2-1. George Deveau then gave DU a 3-1 lead on a shot upper middle with authority. Selvius then stopped his fellow goalkeeper Alex Weaver on a ball slightly to his left. Yovany Duran ended it on a low right shot for the 4-1 outcome in PK's.

"It was a massive win for the boys today!," said head coach Chris Hughes. "It was a great battle against Northern Michigan and both teams gave what they had. I'm thrilled we found a way to advance. We will take a day or two to recover and prepare for the next match on Friday against Parkside."

O'Riordan scored his second goal of the season as mentioned before in the ninth minute. Marquess took a free kick from 34 yards and it got on goal as Weaver made a diving stop. O'Riordan cleaned up the rebound in front of the net for the 1-0 lead. Shawn Clarke tied the match in the 43rd minute and then neither team could score the rest of the way.

Davenport had 23 shots including eight on goal. Northern Michigan totaled 19 shots including 10 on goal. The Panthers will take on Parkside in the semifinals on Friday, April 30 at Saginaw Valley State. The time had not yet been determined at press time.
