CALEDONIA, Mich. - The bottom third of the order came up big on Saturday as the baseball team defeated Gannon 16-6 in their home opener for the third straight win and to get back over the .500 mark at 6-5. DU tied their season high with 16 runs and scored nine of those in the sixth inning to break the game open.
Gannon took control of the game early and led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Davenport then scored 12 straight runs with three to tie the game in the fifth and then the nine-run outburst in the sixth when they collected eight hits and sent 15 hitters to the plate.
Davenport recorded 16 hits including seven doubles and two triples.
Kamrin Markwardt had two of those doubles and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Carson Eby continued his hot streak going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI.
Hunter Ruhstorfer went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, and three runs scored.
Nolan Bryant led the team with four RBI and had a triple among his two hits.
Nolan Anspaugh drove in three runs and had a sacrifice fly and a pair of singles.
Derrick Edington got the start and went 4.2 innings in the no-decision as he left the game down 4-1. He fanned five and walked one.
James Kohl tossed 3.1 relief innings of Edington and got the win. He allowed four hits, one run and struck out six with no walks.
Duncan Gillett threw one inning in the ninth and allowed an unearned run with a strikeout.
