COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing Ohio Dominican for the third and fourth times this season (won the first two in Tennessee), the Davenport University softball team dropped a pitchers' duel in game one, 1-0, before losing the rematch, 9-3. Next up on the schedule, the Panthers will begin GLIAC play with a doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State on March 24 at 3:30 p.m.
Ellie Muilenburg (3-3) suffered the hard-luck loss in game one as she gave up just one earned run on six hits with only one walk and six strikeouts. The difference came in the bottom of the fourth when Ohio Dominican's Braxton Downs hit a solo homerun to left field.
Davenport's one hit didn't come until the top of the seventh when
Rylie Kalina led off the inning with a double to center.
Jorden Urban then came in to pinch-run and moved up to third base thanks to
Lindsay Goodman's sacrifice bunt to the third baseman. However, on
Addison Binney's ensuing flyout to center, Urban tried to tag up and score from third, but was thrown out at home by the center fielder.
In the nightcap, Ohio Dominican scored eight of its nine runs in the second and the ninth run came in the third. For Davenport,
Mariah Cura scored on a
Rachel Griffin sacrifice fly in the third before Cura singled in
Monica Meger and Griffin singled in
Anelise Worden, both in the fourth.
In the circle,
Emma Miller (1-3) surrendered eight runs, only three earned, on five hits in one and two-thirds innings pitched. In relief,
Taylor Simon handled the final four and a third frames with one earned run on three hits and three free passes.
