Panthers earn a split against former WHAC foes

LIMA, Ohio - The Davenport men's tennis team traveled to Lima, Ohio to reunite against former Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foes in Northwestern Ohio and Lawrence Tech. The Panthers found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-1 decision against UNOH on Friday and then responded with a 4-3 win over Lawrence Tech on Saturday. Davenport now stands at 5-3 overall this season.

On Friday, the Panthers fell to the Racers (4-1) by a 6-1 score and now are 0-19 all-time against UNOH. Sergio Conde and Marcos Salazar pulled out a 7-5 win at one doubles over Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and Juan Jose Pino Contoleon. Frank Piana III and Daniil Khitrou picked up a 6-4 win at two doubles over Alfredo Barcelo and Alex de Vilar. The Racers clinched the point at three doubles in a tiebreaker 7-6 (13-11). It was the longest doubles match of the season.

Three of the six singles matches went three sets but the Racers won all of them to propel to the victory. Conde and van Antwerpen battled as Conde came back down 6-3 with a 6-4, 6-1 finish. Malik Omarkhanov at three singles won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Khitrou. Contoleon and de Vilar had the marathon match at five singles. de Vilar found a way to win by scores of 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 12-10. Jonathan Bulmer got a point at four singles for the Panthers with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Barcelo.

On Saturday, DU took a close 4-3 win over Lawrence Tech (2-4) and improved to 5-2 all-time against the Blue Devils. The Panthers found themselves down after two doubles wins by Lawrence Tech. Alexander Tammaro and Patrick Putschbach at one doubles beat van Antwerpen and Contoleon 6-4. Jannis Schneider and Kevin Bollmann at two doubles won 6-3 over Piana III and Khitrou.

Davenport captured four singles wins to take the victory. The Panthers were down 3-1 before coming back with the final three wins. Bulmer at four singles won 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 over Pedro Garcia-Orellana. Khitrou at three singles improved to 6-2 in singles matches this season with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Nico DaMotta. van Antwerpen won 6-4, 6-4 at one singles over Tammaro for his fifth singles win this season. Piana III got a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at two singles over Putschbach.
