Bogema Earns First Shutout in WIn Over Purdue-Northwest

DU netminder has a big third period to seal the win

Written by Tyler Kuehl

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After what they looked at as a disappointing tie, the D2 Hockey team looked to get back on the winning track on Saturday night in their second meeting of the weekend with Purdue-Northwest.

While the Pride put up a good fight, DU was able to take advantage of their chances, and another solid goaltending performance helped the Panthers to victory.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 4 – Purdue-Northwest 0
Shots: DU 38 | PNW 32
Power Play: DU (1/3) | PNW (0/4)
Records: DU (3-0-1) | PNW (2-6-1)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Spencer Sandberg had a pair of assists in the win, with sophomore netminder Brenden Bogema earning his first career shutout, stopping all 32 shots he faced.

ROUGH START

Similar to the game on Friday, the game was physical, and featured only one tally in the first period. Each team was throwing the body around, but only three penalties were called. The ice was finally broken late in the frame as Spencer Sandberg won a faceoff back to Nathan Hartline, and the rookie ripped in his fourth of the season to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

SETTLING DOWN

The physical play continued into the second stanza, but the Panthers were able to take control. Just a few minutes in, on the power play, Sandberg rushed the puck, end-to-end, into the Pride zone. He threw a pass out in front to Ryan Gamber. His first shot attempt was stopped by PNW's Curtis Campbell, but Gamber was able to poke the rebound in for his second of the season to make it 2-0 DU.

DU continued to press in the period, and with less than two minutes left, Ty Jaenicke took a shot from the point. Campbell got a piece of it, but not all of it, as it just crossed the line for the captain's second goal of the season, putting DU up by three.

SHUTTING THE DOOR

In the third period, the Panthers were able to ice the game, thanks to Spencer Anderson's third goal of the season, along with some exceptional goaltending from Bogema. The Pride looked to break the shutout, firing 14 shots on goal. Yet, the DU netminder stood tall, and the Panthers went on to win by a final score of 4-0.
