Solid Defense Helps DU Complete Weekend Sweep of Lake Superior State

Panthers hold Lakers to six shots on goal in second period, and killed off five of six penalties

Written by Tyler Kuehl

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a convincing 10-1 win on Friday, the Panthers looked to complete the weekend sweep against the Lake Superior State Lakers at home on Saturday.

This time, it was the Lakers who were able to jump out in front. Yet, DU was able to turn the tide back in their favor, and with timely scoring and excellent play in goal, the Panthers are 2-0 to start the season.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 3 – Lake Superior State 1
Shots: DU 42 | LSSU 29
Power Play: DU (0/4) | LSSU (1/6)
Records: DU (2-0) | LSSU (0-4)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Leading the Panthers, offensively, was rookie Gabe Partridge. The freshman picked up a pair of assists in the game, both in the second period. Brendan Bogema was solid in net for the Panthers, earning the win after stopping 28 shots.

UNEXPECTED START

DU came out buzzing on Friday night, scoring five in the opening 20 minutes. However, on Saturday, the Lakers stuck with the Panthers, even scoring first as Cole Ryckman cashed-in on a DU penalty.

Later in the period, Lake Superior State would get another glorious chance, as Alexander Brown went off for five minutes for boarding. While on the penalty kill, and after a few good stops by Bogema, Spencer Sandberg rushed the puck into the Laker zone and fired a shot that was tucked just underneath the bar, giving Sandberg his second shorthanded goal of the weekend, and tying the game at one.

SETTLING DOWN

The Panthers started to take control in the second period, as they outshot the Lakers 16-6 in the middle stanza. Spencer Anderson added his second of the weekend to give DU their first lead of the game less than five minutes into the period. Then, after being unable to cash in on the power play, Davenport extended their lead as Partridge set up Matthew Lyszyk for his first collegiate goal and the Panthers took the 3-1 lead into the final period.

Neither team scored in the final 20 minutes, but not for a lack of trying. Both Bogema and LSSU netminder Gavin Warner made some sensational saves, and DU would cruise to the 3-1 win.

COACH'S CORNER

Here are head coach Chris Green's thoughts following the weekend sweep.

WHO'S NEXT?

Davenport will take a week off before jumping back into action for weekend set of matchups with Purdue-Northwest, who currently hold a record of 1-3?, but will have games against Marian and Lewis before taking on the Panthers.

Davenport won both games at Patterson last season by a combined score of 23-1.

The Friday contest will be at the Kube Sports Complex in Hammond, Ind., with puck drop set for 12:30 p.m.
