GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Looking to split on the weekend, the Davenport University men's basketball team led Northwood 41-40 with just over 10 minutes to play on Saturday. Fast forward to the 5:27 mark and the Timberwovles' advantage was just three, 50-47, thanks to a layup from
Jeff Carrier. However, over the next minute and change, the Panthers were handed a pair of technical fouls, Northwood made three of those four free throws, and pushed its lead to as many as 12, 59-47. Davenport was never able to bounce back and dropped to 0-2 on the season after the 66-56 defeat.
After just three points in the opener,
Evan Hines led all scorers with 15 on Saturday followed by another double-figure effort from
Scott Ulaneo (13) and
Chaz Birchfield tied his career high with 10 points. Birchfield also led the team in rebounds and tied his personal best with seven while
Chris Rollins was on top for both assists with four and steals with three. Rollins and Ulaneo each tallied a block as well.
The third and final tie of the first half came at 8-8 before Northwood outscored Davenport 20-10 the rest of the first half and went into the locker room up 10, 28-18. Neither team shot well in those first 20 minutes as they combined to go only 15-for-49 (30.6 percent) from the field. With just under 12 minutes left in the game, the Panthers finally took back the lead, 39-38, their first since scoring the first bucket of the day. Davenport's third and final lead of the afternoon came at 41-40 before Northwood took the game away in the last 10 minutes.
