Huskies Outrun Panthers Late

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team and Michigan Tech were tied, 51-51, with just over eight minutes to play before the Huskies went on a 9-0 run and took all the momentum. After that, the Panthers could never get closer than five (60-55 and 62-57) before the final 10-point deficit, 73-63.

With the loss, Davenport fell to 19-9 overall and 11-7 in GLIAC play with two games to go in the regular season. Michigan Tech is now 18-8 on the season including 12-6 in league action. With the defeat, the Panthers fell to fourth in the conference standings and the top four will host a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal game on March 3. Next up for Davenport is a trip to Northern Michigan on Saturday with the opening tip set for 1 p.m.

Thursday, four Panthers scored in double-figures including Evan Hines (17), Tafari Beckford (15), Chris Rollins (11), and Chris Pearl (10). Hines finished with his third-career double-double and first at Davenport thanks to a game-high 11 rebounds to go with a personal-best nine free throws made (9-for-10). Rollins led the team in assists (3) while he, Robbie Bramhill and Beckford each notched a steal.

In the first half, Davenport led by as many as five, 11-6, and Michigan Tech's biggest advantage was nine, 33-24, heading into halftime. Out of the intermission, the Huskies pushed their advantage to 10, 36-26, before the Panthers used a 12-2 spurt to tie it up, 38-38, at the 15:23 mark. However, Michigan Tech responded with 11-straight points and was up 49-38 with just under 13 minutes on the clock. Davenport didn't go away quietly, though, and scored 13 of the next 15 points to tie it up for the last time, 51-51. Then came the 9-0 Michigan Tech run that seemingly sealed the game.
