Lakers too much for Davenport to handle

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers knew coming into the game how good the Grand Valley State offense was, but the GVSU defense was just as tough. Davenport scored a season-low 53 points in the game and shot 2/17 from three. The loss is the third straight for DU and they will look to bounce back in a few days when they travel to Cornerstone for a non-conference game.

THE BASICS

Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter of action was sloppy for both teams, with a combined 10 turnovers between the two. Davenport benefited the most from the sloppy play, playing the Lakers to a 13-13 tie after the close of the first. Toni Grace scored seven points in the quarter, including a three that gave Davenport a four-point lead with 1:24 in the quarter. That would be the largest lead of the game for DU as the Lakers ended on a four-point run to end the quarter.

Grand Valley pulled away in the second quarter and put a good size gap that would be hard to erase. The Lakers drained four threes in the quarter and held a 41-25 advantage at halftime. Davenport needed to make a run early in the second half to have a chance to win, being down 16 points. However, the Lakers were the team to make a run to start the third. Grand Valley scored 12 unanswered points and their lead quickly grew to 28 points. Davenport won the fourth quarter, outscoring GVSU 19-13, but the run was too little and too late.
