All smiles heading into the new year for Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers traveled to Cornerstone and faced the Golden Eagles for the first time since 2017. Davenport made it clear early who the better team was, outscoring Cornerstone by a score of 97-47 in the game. The win marks the 10th straight for Davenport over Cornerstone and increases the series record to 23-9. Six different players scored in double digits for the Panthers, including Toni Grace, Scout Nelson, and Madison Jones who all scored 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening few minutes of play was back and forth, with the score being closer than anticipated to start. The scoreboard showed 10-7 in favor of DU with 3:56 to play in the first quarter. Davenport went on a 13-1 run to end the quarter and took a 15-point lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Panthers built on the 15-point lead and made that a 24-point lead after dominating the end of the second quarter. Davenport went on a 13-2 run to end the half and led by 47-23 heading into halftime.
 
The lead continued to grow as Davenport showcased their athleticism throughout the third quarter. Davenport recorded four steals and two blocks in the third and held a 70-33 advantage.
 
In the fourth, DU led by 38 points to start and finished the game with a 50-point advantage. Freshman Ryan Harvey scored the first points of the quarter off of two free throws. Later in the quarter, Katherine Steiner appeared in her first game of the season and scored on a transition bucket with 2:47 to play assisted by Madison Jones. The lead hit 50 for the first time in the game after Nelson hit a jumper with 40 seconds in the game.

The win puts Davenport at 5-6 overall heading into the 2020 year.

UP NEXT
The Panthers don't play again until 2020, when they resume GLIAC play. Davenport will travel to Lake Superior State on January 2 for their next contest.
