Goudelock's Hat Trick Marches Panthers Over Saints

Three shorthanded goals in the third period helped DU earn their second win of the season.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – One night removed from a tough loss against Aquinas, the D1 hockey team met the upstart Saints once again on Sunday. This time, it was on home in front a packed house at Patterson Ice Center.

The game was back-and-forth the majority of the night. The game was tied heading into the third period, before three shorthanded goals, including a hat trick from Adam Goudelock, gave the Panthers their second win of the season.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: #9 Davenport 5 – Aquinas 2
Shots: DU 30 – AC 28
Power Play: DU (0/3), AC (1/5)
Records: DU (2-2), AC (1-1)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

On top of Goudelock's first career hat trick, Marc Anderson had himself a day, scoring a goal and an assist. Jason Rhynold looked sharp in goal, stopping 26 of 28 Aquinas shots.

MARCHING IN

Once the puck was dropped, Aquinas came out determined to get the first goal, outshooting the Panthers 10-1 in the first half of the opening period. They would be rewarded with just under three minutes left, as a Brandon Rozema scored his second goal of the weekend.

POUNCING BACK

Following the goal, DU was able to find their footing offensively before the end of the first. That momentum carried into the second period, as Davenport started to mount an attack towards the Aquinas net. The Panthers would end up outshooting the Saints by a 14-4 margin in the second period. One of the 14 shots came off the stick of Anderson. With a little over six minutes remaining in the period, the puck found its way to Anderson. After fumbling around with it for a moment, Anderson ripped a shot over the glove of AQ's Nick Ottenbacher, top-shelf, for his first goal of the season to bring the game back even at one.

GUIDING THE LEAD

The third period began, and the Panthers continued to send their arsenal into the Aquinas end. A few minutes in, there was a net-mouth scramble around the Saints' crease. The puck squirted out, and found the stick of Goudelock, who tapped it into the open cage to give the Panthers the lead.

The Panthers would go on the penalty kill moments later. DU held their own defensive end, leading to a turnover that gave Goudelock a breakaway. The defenseman made no mistake and he put a shot over the glove of Ottenbacher to put the Panthers up by two.

PENALTY TROUBLE

Despite the shorthanded goal, Aquinas kept on working on the power play, leading to a goal Michael Curran to put the Saints back within one.

Then, late in regulation, Jason Cohan got tangled up with Curran. The Saints' forward retaliated, and stickwork ensued. This led to Cohan receiving a five-minute major penalty for slashing, and was promptly kicked out of the game. Curran would only get a two-minute minor for the incident. Meaning, Aquinas would have a three-minute power play to end the third period.

WALKING SHORT

DU's penalty kill came up big, as the Panthers were blocking shots and passes from the Saints. With just a handful of minutes to go, the puck squirted passed Aquinas' Mason Stewart and into the neutral zone. Nathan Nickelson was in a race with Thomas Davis. The two came together, with Nickelson coming out of the battle with the puck. He walked in on Ottenbacher and scored his first of the season to give the Panthers a two-goal lead for the second time.

DU would continue to hold off the Saints as seconds ticked away. Goudelock put the cherry on top as he completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal, and Davenport would come away with the split against Aquinas with a 5-2 win.
