ANGOLA, Ind. – The D2 hockey team traveled south of the Michigan border for the GMHL Showcase on Friday. Their first opponent was the Lions from Lindenwood University. The Panthers lost last season to Lindenwood in a similar showcase in overtime.
The Panthers' offense that was seen a week ago was held off by a tough Lions's defense and good goaltending from Trever Osborne. Lindenwood's power play burned the Panthers twice on Friday night, leading to their 4-0 victory.
QUICK STATS
Final Score: Davenport 0 – Lindenwood 4
Shots: DU 23 – LU 35
Power Play: DU (0/7), LU (2/5)
Records: DU (1-2), LU (3-0-1)
The Panthers had a couple of chances on the power play early in the contest, but could not convert. The Lions would use the two penalty kills to gain some momentum, leading to a goal by Dante Ardite with just over two minutes remaining in the first period.
In the second period the Panthers'
Drake Deering was able to hold off a daunting Lions attack. That was, until the Lions got a power play a little over halfway through the period. It was then when Nick Elliot scored to put the Lions up by two with the power play goal.
Despite not being able to find their scoring touch in the first two periods, Davenport was still within striking distance heading into the final frame. However, Lindenwood had other ideas. Ian Precht scored right before the 10-minute mark, and Elliot put the icing on the cake for the Lions with his second power play goal of the game, and the Panthers would fall for the second time this season.
WHO'S NEXT?
In the second game of the weekend showcase, DU takes on the Aurora Spartans. Last season, the two teams played an extremely tight defensive battle, with Aurora coming away with the 1-0 win. In four meetings, the Panthers have never defeated the Spartans.
Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday at Thunder Ice Arena.
