Panthers earn a doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs on the road

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport continued their elongated GLIAC road stint with a doubleheader at Ferris State University. The previous series between the teams, back on March 25, resulted in an even 1-1 split. This time around the Panthers held nothing back, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-3 in two wins. The bats were very alive for Alexa Flores in the games. Flores went 5/7, scored three runs, batted in four runs, recorded three doubles and one home run in the doubleheader. The pitching staff and defense took care of business as well in the games. Mallory Teunissen and Ellie Muilenburg combined for 18 strikeouts and gave up three earned runs, while the defense only recorded three errors.

The Panthers executed their offense perfectly in the first inning. French, the lead off batter, singled down the left field line. Then Pauley bunted to the pitcher to advance French to second base. Batting third in the lineup was Flores, who doubled to right field, scoring French from second. Ferris State responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1. The game-winning run scored in the fourth inning for the Panthers. With two outs in the inning French started a string of Panthers getting on base. She got hit by a pitch, then Pauley singled to left field, bringing up Flores with two on base and two outs. Flores blasted a homer to drive in three runs! Teunissen took care of business down the stretch, preserving the Panthers 4-1 lead with four straight scoreless innings.

Davenport continued their total team performance into the second game, improving upon their offense in the process. The Panthers scored three runs in the third inning to give them a 4-0 lead. With Allen and Flores on base, Koza delivered a homer to center field to drive in three runs! Davenport scored another four runs in the fifth inning to build their lead up to eight runs. Jewell, Crawford, and Rowe all recorded RBI's in the fifth. Jewell singled to third base, scoring Flores, then Crawford singled to first base, scoring Griffin. Lastly, Rowe singled to center field, scoring Jewell and Crawford. Muilenburg pitched four scoreless innings before she allowed one run in the bottom of the fifth. She stayed tough throughout the game on the mound, only allowing two earned runs en route to her eighth win of the season.

Coaches Corner
"Proud of our efforts today", stated head coach McCall Salmon. "I thought our team did a fantastic job producing runs at the plate with two outs. Flores' and Koza's home runs came at key times in both games."
 
Up Next
Davenport remains on the road throughout this week, playing a doubleheader at Ashland University tomorrow. The Panthers get about 24 hours before they start their doubleheader at Ashland on Thursday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
