Davenport improves win streak to four with sweep of Ashland!

ASHLAND, Ohio. – The Panthers are in a pivotal part of their GLIAC schedule, playing 14 straight games on the road before finishing the season with 10 of their final 12 games at home. Davenport has taken the challenge head on and boast a four-game win streak. For the second straight day DU swept their opponent, this time the Eagles of Ashland University felt the heat that Davenport brought. The pitching staff for the Panthers, Mallory Teunissen, Ellie Muilenburg, and Kelli Nyenhuis, combined for 14 strikeouts, zero walks and only one earned run. Sophomore Alexa Flores continued her dominant hitting, driving in seven runs and recording two home runs!

All of the Panthers runs occurred in the first inning of play. French led off for DU and was hit by a pitch, sending her to first base. Next up was Pauley, who tripled to right center, scoring French. With no outs and Pauley at third Flores stepped up to the plate. Flores homered over the center field fence to score Pauley and herself, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead after three batters. Davenport was held scoreless for the remainder of the game and Teunissen controlled the game in the circle. She held the Eagles scoreless through five innings before giving one run up in the sixth inning. Teunissen pitched all seven innings and struck out eight batters, improving her record to 16-6 on the season.

Similar to game one, all of the offensive production came in only two innings for Davenport. The Panthers scored four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. In the third inning Flores doubled down the left field line, scoring French and Rowe. The run by Rowe proved to be the game-winning run in the end, due to the Eagles not scoring a single run in the game. Jewell was responsible for the third run of the inning, she flied out to left field and Flores scored, giving Jewell a sac fly. The final run was scored by Griffin off of a Koza single to left field. The bench went nuts in the fourth inning when Flores recorded her second home run of the day over the left center fence, scoring Kennedy Crawford, French, and herself. Flores has hit a home run in three of her last four games.

Coaches Corner
After the game head coach McCall Salmon stated the following. "Great all around team performance! Our defense made some terrific plays behind two great outings on the mound from Mallory and Ellie. Great to get another conference road sweep!"
 
Up Next
At the moment, the Panthers are scheduled to play another doubleheader at Northwood University on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Midland, Mich. We will keep you updated with changes if they are made due to weather.
