Panthers Get Pair of One-Run Wins over Indiana Tech

Matt Priebe had a two-out, two-RBI walkoff single in game 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team picked up a pair of clutch one-run wins on Saturday to increase their lead in the WHAC standings. DU broke a tie in the bottom of the eighth in game one's 4-3 win and Matt Priebe hit a two-out, two-RBI single in game two's 5-4 win over Indiana Tech. The victories improve the Panthers to 27-8 overall and 15-1 in the conference.

The two teams traded single runs throughout the first game. Every time the Warriors got a run it was Davenport answering to tie the game. Both teams scored in the first inning as Indiana Tech scored courtesy of a pair of errors. Davenport got their run on a RBI triple by Travis Bolin after Brian Sobieski led off with a double.

The Panthers trailed 2-1 after the Warriors scored in the top of the fourth. DU committed two more errors in the half inning allowing a run to score. JP North tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single as Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle scored from third.

Davenport gave up another run in the top of the fifth as the Warriors scored another unearned run off starter Corey Murphy. DU tied it in the bottom of the sixth as Larkin-Guilfoyle had a RBI single scoring Priebe from second. The winning run in the bottom of the eighth started as Bolin singled through the left side. Priebe singled through the left side also and moved Bolin to third. Zac Wilson had a RBI groundout to second to score Bolin.

Jonathan Cheshire entered in the ninth and retired Indiana Tech in order for his eighth save of the season. Murphy improved to 7-0 going eight innings and allowing five hits and no earned runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out five Warriors. Cody Kellar took the loss in relief for Indiana Tech pitching two innings.

Davenport got on the board first in the nightcap in the bottom of the first. Bolin hit a two-out home run to left for his 11th of the season, one shy of tying the single-season school record. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead with single runs in the second and third. Zach Fyfe had a RBI infield single in the second and Branson Dossen had a RBI single off the diving glove of Connor Seymour at shortstop in the third.

The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the third to regain the lead 3-2. Sobieski hit a two-run home run to left for his fourth of the season. The Warriors took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the sixth as Bryan Saucedo was replaced by Alex Schuiling on the mound after a leadoff single by Peyton Newsom. Mark Carpenter had a RBI double to score Newsom and Cheshire came into the game. Kyle Mead struck out looking to end the sixth with a runner on second.

Caleb Leach stranded two runners in the top of the seventh as he struck out two batters to end the inning. He would get the win (2-0) when his teammates rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sobieski was hit by a pitch with one out and Bolin reached base with two outs on a fielding error which put runners on second and third. Priebe then hit a 1-0 pitch through the left side scoring both runners.

Saucedo went five innings in the start for DU allowing five hits and two earned runs. He walked and struck out five in 96 pitches. Josh Wiesman fell to 2-2 for Indiana Tech despite giving up no earned runs in 3.2 relief innings. Bolin hit his 14th double of the season to go with his home run and scored twice.
