GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – DU needed to come from behind in game one Tuesday afternoon before a dominant second game against Aquinas gave the Panthers a sweep and advanced their 2016 record to 24-7, 4-0.
The Panther offense started slowly in game one against the Saints as the teams remained scoreless after four innings. Starting pitcher
Emily Maves kept the Aquinas offense silent with nine strikeouts through her first four innings in the circle. Aquinas managed to take the lead in the top of the fifth when they turned a DU error into an unearned run on a two-out double as they took a 1-0 lead.
DU responded immediately with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers would bat around in the inning as they used six hits to push five runs across the plate and DU took the 5-1 lead.
Aby Brambila knocked a one out RBI single that scored
Sarah Schneidenbach to tie the game, and
Alyssa Koziol hit a sacrifice foul ball that drove in
McKenzie Rowe as DU took over the lead for good.
Aquinas brought the game to a 5-3 score on a two run home run in the top of the sixth inning, but Maves maintained the DU lead as she went on to take the win in the circle. She would strike out 11 batters to earn her 13
th victory of the season following her complete game effort. Rowe led the DU offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate while
Lindsay Tasma recorded a 2-for-3 game.
The Panther offense remained hot in the second game with a three-run first inning that sparked 11 runs for the Panthers on six hits for the game. Brambila got the offense going with her fourth home run of the season on a two-run shot to left center field. Eastman then followed with a solo home run as DU took a 3-0 lead after one inning. The Panthers added four runs in the third and four more in the fourth as DU took the game, 11-1, in five innings. Tasma knocked her third home run of the season in the third inning to help DU take a 7-0 lead. Eastman and
Alyssa Koziol each recorded an RBI in the fourth to aid the four-run DU fourth inning as the Panthers took out the Saints in five innings.
Eastman went on to record a 3-for-3 game at the plate with two RBI. Tasma recorded a 1-for-2 game with two RBI and Brambila finished 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs scored.
Mallory Teunissen (10-3) earned the decision in the circle for DU with four scoreless innings pitched and four strikeouts.
Kyleigh Linebaugh relieved Teunissen for one inning pitched, one strikeout, and one unearned run allowed.
