Strong Pitching Leads Panthers to Sweep of Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Strong pitching led the Panthers Saturday afternoon in a pair of one-run victories over Concorida University (MI). DU secured the sweep as starting pitchers Emily Maves and Mallory Teunissen did not allow an earned run and the Panthers advanced their 2016 record to 26-7, 6-0.

DU needed extras to break the 0-0 stalemate with the Cardinals in the opening game of the double header. Maves shut Concordia down with her fourth shutout of the season behind 14 strikeouts. Carli SanMillan would record the game-winning hit in the top of the ninth that scored Lauren French to give Maves the run support she needed to advance to 14-3 on the season.

Teunissen kept the dominant Panther pitching going in game two as she recorded a complete game in the circle to advance to 11-3 on the season and did not allow an earned run.

DU would see a pair of runs cross the plate in the top of the first to take over the lead that they would not surrender. Alyssa Eastman hit a two-run single that scored SanMillan and McKenzie Rowe as she upped her RBI total on the season to 33. DU then added two more insurance runs in the fourth as French and Haley Obetts each recorded an RBI single and the Panthers took the 4-0 lead. Costly errors by the Panther defense allowed the Cardinals to bring the game to a 4-3 in the fifth inning, but Teunissen shut the door over the final two Concordia at bats.

Eastman and French each recorded 2-for-3 games at the plate to lead the offense. Obetts went 2-for-2 while SanMillan finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
