RICHMOND, Ind. – Davenport fell in overtime against the Red Wolves of Indiana University-East by a score of 93-88 on Monday night in non-conference action. The Panthers had a couple possession lead heading into the last four minutes of play, but were unable to hold onto that lead. The game was forced into overtime where the Red Wolves scored 11 points compared to the Panthers six points to win the game. Senior
Kevin Rich etched himself into the history books of Davenport with his 38-point performance.
The first half saw the Panthers build a lead of 11 points with 6:46 left in the half.
Robbie Bramhill hit two free throws after a technical foul by the opposing head coach. Over the next six minutes IU-East cut down the Panthers lead possession after possession. Davenport went into half leading 49-46 after an offensive heavy half for both teams.
Kevin Rich had 18 points at half while shooting 7/8 from the field. Bramhill chipped in ten points on a perfect 2/2 shooting from three and 4/4 from the free throw line.
Davenport led for almost the entire second half, however the Red Wolves made a late run just like in the first half. The Panthers led 79-68 with 4:30 remaining in the second half after a free throw by Rich. IU-East went on a 14-3 run over the last four and a half minutes to push this game into overtime. During that span, Davenport missed six free throws and had two turnovers. The Red Wolves took the lead with 42 seconds left in the game.
Javon Haines made a floater in the paint with 11 seconds to tie the game and help push the game into overtime.
The teams traded free throws early on in the extra period. With 2:44 left in the period, Davenport led by two points after two free throws by Rich. IU-East made yet another late period run and ultimately won the game this time around. The Red Wolves went on a 7-0 run over the last two minutes and thirty seconds.
Rich had himself a historic night as he scored 38 points, this stands as the second-most points scored in a game by a Davenport player. He went 12/17 from the field, a perfect 4/4 from three and 10/13 from the free throw line. Rich also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and dished out three assists. Haines and
Khadim Dieng also contributed mightily during the game. Dieng had ten points and eight rebounds. Haines scored 20 points and had three rebounds and four assists.
Davenport now stands at 7-3 and are a third of the way through their regular season schedule. The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they host Siena Heights on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
