Baseball Takes Two From Cornerstone to Sweep Beltline Rivalry

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Zack Sardellitti had five hits including two doubles and RBI each, Ryan Butzer allowed one run in two appearances as the second-ranked Davenport baseball team earned an 11-1, 10-4 doubleheader win at Cornerstone to complete the three-team Beltline Rivalry sweep Wednesday.
 
Davenport improves to 38-3 overall and 22-2 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and will turn focus on Northwestern Ohio, which is second in the league standings. The two teams will meet at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Game 1 – Davenport 11, Cornerstone 1 (7 innings)
Corbin Clouse scattered a hit and a walk in three innings before turning it over to Corey Sessions (4-0). Sessions would allow an unearned run in the fifth inning while Butzer tossed a perfect inning.
 
Davenport took a 2-0 lead in the second. Matt Priebe led off with a walk, Sardellitti hit a one-out double and the two scored on Dre Celestijn's sacrifice fly and Brandon Cable's RBI single.
 
The Panthers did all the damage in the fifth, when they put seven runs on the board highlighted by two-run double by Celestijn.
 
Game 2 – Davenport 10, Cornerstone 4
Tied at three runs apiece, Davenport broke the tie with a six-run fourth inning. The Panthers used four singles, two walks and an error to grab the lead.
 
Starter Brandon MacKinnon lasted only 1 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing three runs on as many hits and two walks. Butzer (5-0) carried the Panthers with 2 2/3 of work while Alex Schuiling and Jonathan Cheshire went the rest of the way with shutout performances.
