GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport tennis team's had a two match week as both the men and women's team faced Lawrence Tech and Indiana Wesleyan at home this week. The women were able to beat Lawrence Tech, 5-0, before they took down No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan, 5-4. The men beat the Blue Devils, 5-2, but they lost to the Wildcats, 5-2. The women will be in action on Sunday as they face Saginaw Valley State, while the men will host Aquinas next Thursday.
On Wednesday, the women were able to win their second straight match as they beat Lawrence Tech, 5-0. After taking all three double matches,
Angelica Woods and
Bridget Barrett were able to grab the final two points for the Panthers in the 5-0 win.
In a battle of top-20 teams on Friday, the Lady Panthers were able to win their straight match as the 18th-ranked Davenport squad was able to edge 14th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan. After trailing 2-1 after doubles, Davenport was able to win singles two through five to edge the Wildcats, 5-4, to move to 8-6 on the season.
The men started the week with a 5-2 win over Lawrence Tech, where they led 2-1 after doubles. After splitting the first two singles matches, Matt Boyle and Matheus Carvalho grabbed the final two wins for the Panthers to snap their two match losing skid.
In the final match of the week for the men, they faced No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan, where they found themselves in a 2-1 hole after doubles, and the Panthers looked to make a comeback in singles, but the Wildcats won three of four matches in singles, two of which came in the third set.
The women's team will be back in action on Sunday as they hit the road to face Saginaw Valley State, while the men will be off until Thursday, when they host Aquinas at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
