Two Freshmen Goals Put Women’s Soccer Back on Winning Track

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7 Davenport women's soccer team returned to its winnings ways following a tough loss earlier in the week. Freshmen Alice Linsell and Ellie Chandler scored their first career goals in the opening half and the Panthers went on to shut out Marygrove 2-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers, who donned the color purple for the day in support for Bridget Zuidgeest's mother Pam as she battles cancer, improved to 7-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference while they dropped the Mustangs to 1-9-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the league.

After what appeared to be a slow start, the Panthers jumped on the board in the 27th minute when Amanda Skidmore fed a pass to Linsell who fired a shot just under the crossbar for the goal. Davenport added an insurance goal four minutes before intermission. After a first corner kick attempt was knocked out of bound by the Mustangs, Shameeka Fishley delivered another corner from the left side and the ball found the foot of Chandler who made several touches before slotting it across the goal line.

Davenport went on to out shoot Marygrove 22-3 overall, 10-2 on goal. It was also all DU on the corner kick department with the Panthers taking nine opportunities to the Mustangs none.

The Panthers three-match homestand continues Wednesday as they welcome crosstown rival Aquinas for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Post-Match Notes
