Before joining the collegiate ranks, Hewson was an assistant coach at Creston High School in Grand Rapids, Mich., during the 2010 season. At Creston, he worked with the sprints, jumps and hurdles events, qualifying six athletes in eight events for the MHSAA State Meet.

In addition to being a four-time national qualifier, Hewson served the role of team captain from 2008-10. Beginning 2010, the Saints began a Team Captain award named after him.

Hewson completed his graduate work at Davenport, earning a Masters of Management in 2017.
