CALEDONIA, Mich. - The baseball team concluded the second game of a doubleheader from yesterday losing 11-7 and then played their final game of the weekend series against Ashland and won 10-4 to even the weekend series with the Eagles.
Only one out needed to be recorded to wrap up yesterday's second game that was suspended due to lightning. Perry Bewley entered to pitch to
Noah Marcoux with runners on first and second and struck him out to get his fifth save. He ended up saving both games of the doubleheader. Jake Depperschmidt got the win for Ashland going five relief innings and improved to 3-0. He allowed five hits and three earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Derrick Edington took the loss for Davenport and is now 1-2 on the mound. Edington lasted 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts.
Christian Petre went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Panthers.
Carson Eby went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Carter Troncin also had a pinch-hit, two-RBI double in the eighth inning.
The Panthers improved to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference with their win 10-4 to conclude the series. The team scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to propel them to victory.
Duncan Gillett tossed two scoreless innings to start but allowed two runs in the third including a balk to plate the second run.
Cal Djuraskovic made a long relief appearance finishing the game with 6.1 innings. It was the longest outing for his career and he also struck out a career-high 11 batters. He entered in the third and promptly struck out the first six guys he faced.
Ashland took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth finally putting a mark on Djuraskovic with two runs. Logan Stoldt had a double to left and Seth Schroeder had a two-run single up the middle. Josh Smith came into the game in the seventh on the mound for Ashland and Davenport began their big rally.
Kamrin Markwardt had a RBI single to center as
Noah Marcoux scored and then during a 2-2 count, the Eagles went to Josh Meyer out of the bullpen. Meyer walked pinch hitter
Logan Hylek to load the bases and then
Hunter Ruhstorfer had one of his biggest hits of the season with a bases-clearing double off the wall in left to give DU a 6-4 lead.
Ricky Clark later had a RBI single to score Ruhstorfer. Petre followed with a RBI double down the left field line and then Marcoux drove in two runs on a single through the right side of the infield. Marcoux went 4-for-5 to lead the offense. Eby went 2-for-4 and was hit by a pitch. Ruhstorfer collected two hits in five at-bats. DU had 16 hits in the contest.
