Crazy Day ends with a split at Quincy

Nolan Anspaugh hit for the cycle in Game 2 and Derrick Edington got the pitching victory

QUINCY, Ill. - It was a crazy day on the diamond on Saturday as Davenport split a pair of games with Quincy at QU Stadium. The Hawks won 20-9 in seven innings in Game 1 and the Panthers took Game 2 by a final of 16-7.

Game 1 saw Quincy win for the second time in the series and jumped all over the Panthers with three runs in the first and nine more in the second to lead 12-1. Davenport scored in five of the seven innings but the Hawks pounded out 15 hits including seven home runs (tied for the most allowed in school history). Gino D'Alessio had a grand slam in the second inning and Michael Nielsen also had a three-run shot in the second. Nielsen drove in six runs and had three hits for Quincy.

Noah Marcoux went 3-for-4 with three RBI and drove in a run with a single in the third, a double in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth. Ben Mets reached base three times with a double and two walks and also scored two runs. Carson Eby had a double in three at-bats. Christian Petre went 3-for-4 with two runs and tied a career high with five RBI. He had a RBI single in the second, a three-run homer in the fourth and a RBI triple in the fifth. He also stole a base along with Nolan Bryant.

The Panthers showed some resiliency after two lopsided losses to start the series by winning Game 2 in convincing fashion. Ricky Clark got the start but only went two innings with three strikeouts. Derrick Edington got the victory in relief going five innings. He allowed just two hits and a run with one walk and three punchouts. Cal Djuraskovic tossed a clean eighth inning and struck out a batter.

Nolan Anspaugh hit for the cycle going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. He reached base five times by also drawing a walk and stole a bag. Anspaugh became the first player since Travis Harvey on April 5, 2019 to hit for the cycle. He had a double in the first, single in the fifth, triple in the sixth, and a home run in the eighth.

Bryant went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Harvey drove in three runs and hit a two-run jack in the eighth inning. Aaron Cardoza drove in two runs on a double in the sixth. Eby went 3-for-5 with a double and scored three times.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series as DU looks to even up the series tomorrow in a single game at 1:00 pm eastern time.
