Box Score 2 DETROIT, Mich. - The Davenport tennis teams traveled to Wayne State on Friday but could not come back home with a win against the Warriors. The men's team dropped a 7-0 decision, their first in the GLIAC this season moving to 2-1. The women's team fell 6-1 and are now 0-3 in the conference.
The men's tandem of
Frank Piana III and
Daniil Khitrou put up quite a fight at two doubles before falling 7-6 in a tiebreaker against Daniel Grey and Donovan Nguyen.
Matt Leatherman at six singles was the last match to finish and it was a see-saw affair. He won the first set 7-6 but then fell 6-1, 10-7.
Jonathan Bulmer battled to three sets at four singles against David Solar. Solar won the first set 6-1 but Bulmer rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set. Solar took a 6-2 score in the decidiing set.
Juan Jose Pino Contoleon at five singles needed three sets and it started out bleak downed 6-0 in the opening set. He rebounded for a 7-6 second set but it was 10-4 in the super tiebreaking third set.
The women's team was unable to fill a complete lineup having to forfeit at three doubles and six singles.
Willemien Coetzee and
Kailyn Skogmo fought to the end at two doubles falling 7-5 against Brianna Douglas and Irena van Meer. Coetzee picked up a point at one singles. She matched with Linda Liong and beat her 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 in a thrilling match. The other singles ended in straight sets.
