ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A slow start was too much to overcome on Saturday for the Davenport men's lacrosse team at Lewis University in GLVC play. The Panthers are now 0-3 while the Flyers improved to 2-1.
Lewis broke a 1-1 tie in the first quarter with five straight goals to lead 6-1 with 12:17 left in the second quarter. Nolan Dalep scored the first two goals of the run and Jack Stone scored with three seconds left in the first quarter to make it 4-1 after 15 minutes. Hunter Loprino and Drew Andre increased the lead to five for Lewis.
Davenport scored three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 7-4 at the 4:20 mark of the second quarter.
Jordan Caskenette's man-up goal at 9:17 was assisted by
James Johnston.
Austin Thompson scored just over a minute later from
Trent Eichbauer. Thompson scored again from Eichbauer at 4:20 and then Loprino scored his second of the game at 1:51 and Kai George scored with 11 ticks left until halftime. Drew Kask assisted on both of those goals as the Flyers led 9-4 at intermission.
Stephen Ochsenkehl scored the first goal of the third quarter on a man-up from Caskenette at 13:27. Down 11-5 it was Caskenette, Thompson and
Adam Smellie with a man-up goal at 5:56 of the fourth quarter to cut it to 11-8. Dalep scored twice more and Andre scored the final goal as Lewis pulled away and took the win.
The final shots read 45-24 in favor of Lewis and the Flyers had a 30-20 edge in shots on goal. One area of concern for Davenport has to be in the face-off circle. Lewis won 23-of-26 which leads to more scoring chances and possession. Davenport did finish 3-of-4 in extra man opportunities while Lewis went 0-of-6.
Daniel Milano finished with 10 groundballs and 16 saves in goal for Davenport. Josh Calvin made 12 saves for Lewis and also had five groundballs. Dalep led all goal scorers with five for the Flyers.
