GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - We are beginning to unveil the top moments of the 2019-20 season for Davenport University athletics and we hope you enjoy this quick trip down memory lane over the next few weeks. This year due to spring sports being halted, we have decided not to have a countdown but instead just highlight what the athletic communications department felt like were noteworthy feats.
The Panthers went into the 2019 USA Rugby D1 Nationals with high hopes. The team came in with a 6-3 record, an impressive offense and stout defense.
In their first match of the tournament, the Panthers hosted Northern Iowa. DU came out flying in the first half, outscoring UNI by a 50-0 margin, before taking the 89-26 victory into the next round.
The team traveled down to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY the following weekend, where they would meet a long-time foe in Navy. The Panthers only trailed the Midshipmen by four at the end of the first half, but Navy stormed out of the gate in the second en route to their 43-22 win.
The Panthers capped off their fall season on a high note, winning a consolation game against the University of Pittsburgh, 42-7. DU ended up finishing fifth at Nationals and wrapping up their fall schedule with an 8-5 record.
