CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team ranked 22nd in Division II had a pair of wins on Sunday against Hillsdale to improve to 13-2 overall and extend their win streak to seven games. The tale of two games saw a 13-2 win in game one and then a 7-6 win in 10 innings in game two at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
GAME 1
DU put up double-digit totals in runs and hits once again in this contest against six Charger pitchers. The Panthers kept chipping away throughout the game and ballooned a 6-2 lead into a 13-2 lead with seven runs in the sixth inning. Andrew Verbrugge tossed five innings for Hillsdale and allowed five earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. The Chargers then used five pitchers alone in the bottom of the sixth and seven earned runs were scored. Drew Olssen allowed four of those runs without recording an out and Tommy MacLean allowed three more runs without recording an out.
James Rogers was steady throughout his six innings of work and improved to 3-0 this season. Rogers allowed two runs in the second inning but then threw four scoreless innings from there. He allowed five hits and walked just one. He also tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and threw 84 pitches.
Luke LaLumia tossed one inning in the seventh and walked one with two strikeouts.
Six different Panthers had a double and
Nolan Anspaugh collected a double and triple going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Noah Marcoux ended 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
Roman Trujillo finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and also stole a base.
GAME 2
Sawyer Allen for Hillsdale and
Jacob Buchberger for Davenport got the start but neither factored in the decision as the game would go into extra innings and be decided by the bullpen. Davenport led 4-1 through five innings when Buchberger ran into trouble and allowed two runs in the sixth. He would last six innings and allow eight hits and three earned runs. Allen lasted five innings and yielded seven hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out two Panthers.
The Chargers rallied late with a run in the eighth off
Cal Djuraskovic in the eighth and two more in the ninth off
Evan Maize. Maize was looking for his first career save but lasted one-third of an inning and walked two Chargers.
Ricky Clark walked in the tying run in the ninth but also got a strikeout to send the game in extra innings.
Clark pitched a clean 10th inning and his teammates ended it in the bottom of the inning.
Roman Trujillo hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to center and Buchberger scored the winning run. It was the first extra-inning game of the season for DU.
Buchberger went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and collected his sixth homer of the season and 20th of his career. He also had a triple and drove in two runs. Josh Stella gave up the winning run but did not allow a hit in 3.1 relief innings. He had to issue two intentional walks in the 10th inning to set up a force at home before the Trujillo sacrifice fly.
Travis Harvey finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Anspaugh had a triple and two RBI.
SERIES NOTES
Davenport outscored the Chargers 40-11 in the three games. DU batted .414 with 46 hits in 111 at-bats. The Panthers also only committed one error in 112 chances. The team posted a 3.81 ERA in 26 innings and struck out 30. Anspaugh hit .600 (9-15) in the series with five runs scored and five RBI. Buchberger hit .583 (7-12) with eight runs scored and five extra-base hits.
Kamrin Markwardt hit .583 (7-12) with five runs scored and four RBI.
