Leap Day unkind to the Panthers in 13-6 loss at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team is still feeling things out in NCAA Division II three games into the season. DU slipped to 0-3 overall with a 13-6 loss at Lewis University on Saturday.

Keelan McKouen and Blake Gibson-McDonald each had two goals while Adam Smellie and Jordan Caskenette each had a goal. Avery Buckius led DU with two assists while McDonald and McKouen each had one helper.

Lewis led 3-1 after the first quarter and scored the last three after Smellie began the scoring at 12:27 from McKouen. DU tied it up at 3-3 at 10:48 of the second quarter with goals by McKouen and Caskenette. Lewis retook the lead with back-to-back man-up goals for a 5-3 lead. The Flyers increased their lead to 7-3 late in the second quarter before Gibson-McDonald ended the half with a goal four seconds before intermission.

Gibson-McDonald scored again at 11:25 of the third quarter to get within 7-5. It remained a tight one at 8-6 as McKouen scored at the 4:18 mark of the third quarter from Buckius. Much like the previous game against Lincoln Memorial, a big run determined the outcome. Lewis scored the last five goals including two more man-up goals for the 13-6 final tally. Xan Brouillet scored two goals during the span.

Lewis was led by Karl Flinter with three goals and three assists. Thomas Purfeerst also had two goals and two assists. Daniel Milano made 14 saves for the Panthers. Lewis finished 4-for-8 in man-up opportunities while Davenport was 0-for-2. Lewis also took advantage of winning 15-of-23 in the faceoff circle.
