ALLENDALE, Mich. – Davenport played their final game of the 2019-20 season today, facing crosstown rival Grand Valley State University. The Panthers got in a hole early, trailing by as many as 21 in the first half. Davenport outscored Grand Valley 14-11 in the third, but were outscored in the first, second, and fourth quarter. The loss puts the Panthers final record at 7-21 (2-18) for the season.
The Davenport offense struggled to score the ball in the first quarter of play, putting up just six points. Four of those points belonged to
Taylor Opolka, who scored both baskets off offensive rebounds. The final bucket of the quarter belonged to senior
Jenna Falkenberg, who finished a layup with 34 seconds to play.
The Lakers grew their lead even more in the second quarter and Davenport quickly found themselves down nearly 20 points.
Toni Grace scored the final points of the half and DU headed into the break trailing 18-38.
Davenport had a solid third quarter, outscoring Grand Valley 14-11. The lead was cut all the way down to 14 points after a three by
Scout Nelson with 2:53 to play in the quarter, assisted by
Madison Jones. Grand Valley quickly grew their lead to 20 plus points in the final quarter of play.
The final buzzer of this game was the conclusion of the 2019-20 season for the Panthers. The team ends with a 7-21 overall record and 2-18 in the GLIAC. The two conference wins came against Michigan Tech and Wayne State at home.
Jones finished the season leading the Panthers in scoring, averaging 16 points per game and pouring in 448 total points. She also led the team in made threes with 66 and steals with 72.
Elise Scaggs (154),
Courtney McInerney (153), and Falkenberg (152) were the rebounding leaders. Nelson led the team with 79 total assists and McInerney in blocks with 26.
