Second half woes lead to road loss against Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – The Panthers continued their GLIAC schedule with a short trip to Detroit to face Wayne State University. Davenport held a 41-38 lead at halftime, but the third quarter and fourth quarter were won by the Warriors. Madison Jones scored 21 points in the game and shot 5/9 from three to lead DU in scoring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The defense for Davenport held Wayne State to only seven points through the opening seven minutes of the game. In addition, following a layup by Elise Scaggs, the Panthers held the lead 10-7 with three to play in the quarter. Wayne State finished the final 2:52 on a 11-3 run and took an 18-13 lead.
 
The Panthers needed some offense and got plenty of it in the second quarter. The team poured in 28 points, including an impressive four three-pointers from Jones. She ended the half drilling two threes in a row, giving the Panthers a 41-38 halftime lead.
 
Davenport came out hot in the second half, growing their lead to nine points after a layup by Jenna Falkenberg. Wayne State flipped a switch and outscored the Panthers 23-9, which erased the near double digit lead by DU. Davenport trailed by five points heading into the final quarter.
 
If you have been watching the Panthers throughout this year, you know that there is no quit in them. After getting down by eight points to start the fourth quarter, the team started clawing back. Davenport cut the lead down to two points after a three by Toni Grace, putting the score at 64-66. Following the shot by Grace, the Warriors went on a 17-8 run, closing the game with a double-digit lead.
 
Nelson nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Jones scored a game-high 21 points.
